This scholarship was established in 2002 in memory of Larry Dean Davis, a beloved founding member of the Board of Directors of the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children (now the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation-GA Chapter) who died March 15, 2002, following a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Davis was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and great friend to many. He was deeply committed to the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children and the children served.

 

Herbert Shaw, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

This one-time scholarship, in the amount of $500, will be awarded to one successful candidate annually.  Candidates must be survivors of a pediatric brain or spinal cord tumor who are residents of the State of Georgia and who are entering or currently enrolled in an advanced educational program at a college, university, vocational school, or other setting and who demonstrate a need for financial assistance. The award will be paid directly to the student’s school.

This scholarship is awarded in loving memory of Herbert Shaw, Jr., who passed away February 10, 2008, following a brave battle with pediatric brain cancer.  Herbert was a nineteen year old great son, brother, uncle, and a friend to many. In addition to maintaining honor roll as a high school senior,  he was homecoming king, a drum major for world renowned Southwest Dekalb High School Marching Band, saxophonist, percussionist for Abundant Life Church of Lithonia, Georgia, recipient of the Larry Dean Davis Scholarship and a compassionate individual. His dream was to finish college, start his own foundation to benefit brain tumor kids and to give scholarships as he received. His memory and aspirations continue to inspire others to dream and achieve.
